Focus #1

A Brussels resident who can speak more Dutch has more chances. Is that always the case?

Wednesday 14.11.2018 - 18:00 — 19:30

Beurscafé | Auguste Ortsstraat 20-28, 1000 Brussel

Dutch is necessary for many jobs. As a result, many Brussels residents are learning Dutch.

More and more children are going to school in Dutch – independently from the language they speak at home. They graduate as bi- or multilinguals.

Foreign-speaking Brussels residents massively follow Dutch-speaking classes.

Special programmes whereby participants learn a job and Dutch at the same time? Maybe you hadn’t heard, but Brussels is a pioneer in this area.

Is that enough to increase their chances?

And what is ‘enough’ Dutch?

What responsibility do Brussels residents themselves have?

Wat kan opleiding en onderwijs doen? Wat kunnen werkgevers doen?

And what do you think? Do you think that the stock manager of your supermarket should speak perfect Dutch? Or is ‘Goeiedag, Bonjour‘ enough?
